In 2018, ECOM Vocational Training Institute ( EVTI ), TEEM Development Centre College ( TDCC ), Stephanos Vocational Training Centre ( SVTC ), and FACE Vocational Training Institute ( FVTI ) joined forces in a consortium with the aim of improving the quality of vocational education in Malawi . Thanks to the support of Wilde Ganzen and Verburg Charity Foundation, the educational facilities have been significantly expanded and modernized over the past few years. To support the educational objectives, the vocational schools have also improved and expanded the housing and associated facilities and accommodations at these educational locations. This comprehensive education program ensures regional coverage of high-quality vocational education.
In 2022, the third phase of the TEVET Master Plan was completed at EVTI, involving site works and solar panels. Phase four started in 2024 with the construction of a classroom block and practical training space for the implementation of a new technical training program for installing air conditioning and cooling systems. The projects of phase four have since been successfully completed, and phase five started in 2025. A production workshop is being established at EVTI for the Painting and Decoration program , where students can put their learned skills into practice in a professional environment. At the same time, this allows EVTI to generate revenue.
Outcome
The joint program enhances the quality of vocational education and access for girls. The improved infrastructure and the addition of solar panels ensure a stable learning environment. The new training program for air conditioning and refrigeration systems accommodates 75 young people from across Malawi annually. With the broader and renewed offering following the completion of project phase five, vocational education aligns even better with the needs of the labor market and society, where innovation and modern technical skills are becoming increasingly important. Upon completion of these expansions, the number of students, currently standing at over 1,200, is expected to increase further.
Impact
The consortium increases access to vocational education and promotes employment for young people , particularly within technical sectors. Through improved facilities and new training opportunities, young people can develop skills that significantly strengthen their economic opportunities and contribute to sustainable development in Malawi.
