A five-day national training workshop on promoting gender equity and inclusion in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) recently concluded at Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute in Lilongwe, with stakeholders being urged to translate the knowledge gained during the training into practical reforms within their respective institutions.
Speaking during the closing session, Senior Deputy Director for TVET in the Ministry of Labour, Ms Chifundo Lodzeni, said government expects participants to implement the skills and knowledge acquired during the training.
She said the workshop addressed key issues including gender policies, gender-based violence, sexual harassment, inclusive budgeting and gender-responsive teaching approaches.
Lodzeni added that participants are expected to share the knowledge with colleagues in their institutions and work towards developing gender guidelines that will strengthen institutional systems.
She also said institutions should reinforce codes of conduct for staff and students, noting that such measures will help promote accountability and curb cases of misconduct.
Lead facilitator from AcumenPulse Advisor Limited, Purity Ashkoe, said the workshop combined theory with real-life experiences from Malawi, enabling participants to reflect on challenges affecting learners and identify practical solutions.
The workshop, which began on 2 March, brought together representatives from government ministries, TEVETA and TVET institutions and was coordinated by Don Bosco Tech Africa with support from Don Bosco Mondo.
